Growers
Despite how much of a problem they are, they're actually very simple creatures that rely heavily on the minds they've collected! The way they remember is by absorbing their host's memories, or using their host to 'record' the memories and digesting them later--Growers themselves have very little capacity for short-term memory so they're heavily reliant on the brain of their current host. They're also not very imaginative or creative on their own so in general they're pretty bad liars--they'd have to absorb a lot of
minds to become proficient at it and they'd need practice; generally all Growers will tell one lie: I'm not a Grower, because durr that's the important one for them. But coming up with more elaborate lies and fabrications is hard for them and they're not good at keeping track of things so in general they're pretty truthful even though they will split hairs to the ends of the earth.
They are masters of interpretation, since that's all they do pretty much. There are a few exceptions of course since the more minds a Grower's absorbed the more dangerous they become! The organization of Growers in Minoa is made up of what could be considered "dangerous" Growers; they've each got roughly enough minds to lie and make stuff up, but there are varying degrees of them through their operation. Not ALL the org members are Growers--some rogue Witches have joined them for the pure pursuit of knowledge!
Specifically, Garra is one that's on the lower ends of intelligence, but the higher ends of power. He's absorbed a lot of minds but more than that he's absorbed different demons and animals so his physical capabilities vastly outweigh his mental ones.
Memories & Growers:
Person A is touched by person B, who has a Grower in them; B can now look inside of A and view any memories or experiences they've had. Unless B absorbs any of these memories though, it's very likely that B will forget most of what they see inside of A because while the Grower's mind is connected to A, person B's isn't which means they can't transfer over and absorb the memories from their host. The only way for B to retain A's memories and thoughts is for B to "steal" them from A and digest them properly.
When initially infected by a Grower, typically the first thing the Grower does is to steal bits and pieces from the events that led up to them being infected; this generally allows them to get a foothold inside their host without their host actually knowing they've been infected. Of course dumber Growers won't do this but all the ones with a couple of minds under their belts will. Also, while it's convenient to get a foothold this way it's not a long-term solution if the Grower wants to actually grow in order to become stronger they need to absorb full thoughts and memories and they need them to be cohesive; too many fragments and the memories get so many holes in them that it's like trying to assemble a 38983496934 piece jigsaw puzzle. This is extremely inconvenient for most Growers since the download process between "the last of host A" and "the start of host B" usually takes a while.
Most Growers like to absorb memories slowly and at their own pace since keeping their host alive keeps them alive! And while they absorb memories they can't be physically active with their hosts because they're feeding off of and draining from their minds. This leaves them very vulnerable (and usually the host unresponsive, depending on how much of their mind has been eaten). Most choose to eat while their host is asleep!
Once the tipping point is reached between host memories vs what the Grower's eaten, they need to "become" that person instead of letting them live their life for the Grower. Like I mentioned before Growers can absorb thoughts and memories from people outside of their host even while they're inside them so long as a potion of their real body enters the desired person.
For example, a Grower seeking to feed off of a Witch's magic cast a shadow that entered her mouth and from there it ate away at her magic until it was chased off. This didn't mean she was infected though! The Grower's host was another person and it remained in its host body throughout the exchange.
Growers have 2 types of absorption they can perform! Mental and physical. Mental is obvious--they take whatever they can out of their host's mind and transfer it into their own. Physical is much longer and more difficult process because typically, Growers themselves have no bodies. They're just shadows that attach themselves to people and hide inside their bodies. To absorb a body means stretching and casting their self over the body and breaking it down, but to do this they need complete darkness and that's not always easy to find; it also takes a LONG TIME so the Grower is very vulnerable.
Garra is a physical-type; he's actually physically absorbed more people than mentally absorbed them and while most of the Organization dislikes physical-types because they're typically less intelligent, Garra has absorbed SO MANY that he's able to augment himself. This is basically like drawing out the bodies he's absorbed and stretching them over his host self to use as weapons. This method of manipulation is very rough on host bodies though and generally they're useless in under a year, so very few Growers are physical-types.
Within the org is another tiny sub-section of people who are not actually infected! Their only purpose though is to learn, collect knowledge & experience, feed it to Growers, and then re-learn it so they can give it to the next one that needs it. All non-Grower org members typically make some sort of "donation" regardless of their position, save for some of the Witches in certain divisions. Since Growers can't share memories between each other they rely heavily on these sorts of people to make sure that no matter how inactive a Grower's been, they'll always remain up-to-date on what the Organization's doing. There's a once-a-year download period for most Growers where they return to home base and catch up on things, but core members will typically get daily updates.
Another detriment to being a physical-type is the fact that they're also more susceptible to Light-based magic and when they're damaged by it/portions of their body are damaged, that takes away directly from the experience and bodies they've absorbed so they stand a lot more to lose than most Growers.
The problem some Growers have when they take in a lot of minds is that they don't always act harmoniously and it's a real task to keep everything perfectly merged. Most Growers never fully absorb a person because there'd just be too much. Garra more or less says FUCK ALL OF THAT and takes everything, and as a result he's more or less insane for most of the time he's at full strength.
